Another noble lord, and that no less a personage than Lord Rosebery, in list be credited with mixed metaphors in profusion. He had been fond of late years of referring to "lonely furrows" and "spade work," and in this connection he once advised an audience that more "spade work was necessary, lest the wave be lost in space." He was referring to the "wave of enthusiasm," -which, 30 years ago, was defined by a statesman as "the common voice of the people expressed in one unanimous roar."
