A TRIUMPH OF ENGINEERING.
London's latest lake, estimated to hold fifty^six ..aaid a^half million gallons of water, has just "l^n^ur&y 1 lodged onthe' side of a liiH at Honor" Oak. The new reservoir, a vendeTful engineering task, commenced bythe Metropolitan Water Board three years ago, and is to be opened by the Lord Mayor. It was designed by Mr J. W. Whestler, Deputy Chief Engineer to the Board, and, ..although but little public interest..Jias been .... excited thus far, the undertaking has been vory^ closely watched by experts. who have looked upon it as-a unique. and particularly important pie«ee of work. One of the principal: features of the new lake is -the/acfc I^t. , it is the largest covered, reservoir, ovor constructed at one tirne^ The roof is built of arches supported by. brick piers. : -- ■>'.-■■ • The water, which will "be filtered, will oomo from Hampton, and the fifty-six and a-half million gallons will ropresont one day's allowance to . a. quarter of the total population which is supplied by the Metropolitan Water Board. The reservoir has a depth of fron} 21 Aft. to M&, p^our hundred men have been , continually employed, and sixteen million bricks —a large proportion of which were mado oh the spot-—have been used : n tho construction. The total cost involved is £225,000.
