THEOSOPHICAL LECTURE.
Tlio. local branch of the Thoosopliical Society have had a visit from the organising lecturer. .Mr J. R. Thomson, whogay-e the first of ,a series of lectures in Morgan's tea-rooms last night, to a fair attendance. In outlining his subject Mr Thomson explained that Theosophy was the inner and spiritual truth, which underlies all outward forms' of religion and its ■central idea is the belief that the universe is in its essence. spiritual, and that man is a spiritual being in process of evolution; that man, in fact, contains within himself everything in the universe in a latent state, and that his advancement meant the development of these latent powers into actualities. The lecturer pointed out that Theosophy was emphatic in its assertion of the possibility of proving the unseen- reality behind manifested life^— the soul and spirit in man and •the universe. He claimed that this intelligent and spiritual side ought to be made a matter of knowledge instead of being merely an. object of faith j that there was a science of the soul as much as there was a science of the body, and that religion to-day needed this reinforcement of know-, ledge to enable it to hold grouiid against materialism. Further, it was necessary to vindicate not only the •reality, biit also the rightful supremacy of the spiritual life. '-,-■■' After answering Questions, Mr Thomson, announced that it- was his intention of staying in Dannevirke until Sunday next, and wxnjld be pleased to see anyone interested In the causd' during his stay here. Datos of future m<.-eting will be advertised .in our columns.
