■ CANTERBURY COLLEGE CELE- , BRATION. [press association.] " CHRISTCHURGH, to-day. The holiday is not generally observed, but Canterbury College celebrated it as Empire Day. The Governor, presided, and delivered a speech | of -some, length. He deprecated jingoism in these ( celebrations. It was far better to realise the difficulties and 'responsibilities of, the Empire, Avhich was one of tremendous strength, but there was stupendous carelessness displayed in arranging its forces. , Recent events would be a blessing iv , disguise, if the only result would be • | the. naval conference. He referred to the excellent spirit actuating the various, colonies, and expressed admiration at New Zealand's Dreadnought offer.
