THE SPEKERSHIP.
: t m The Government nomination for the Speakership has not yet been settled. In tho ordinary course of events, Mr Guinness would' naturally look for a continuance of the office, but many ' hold the opinion that, judging from his recent utterances, he is more anxious to show is independence as a private member than to again seek election as Speaker. It is possible, however, that on the assembling of members a week hence, a different complexion may be placed on his attitude. ► In the event of his adherence to his expressed intention of remaining free to advocate his accident insurance scheme and West Coast interests from the floor of tho Hoiise, it is stated in well-informed circles that thechoice of the Government will fall on Mr Baume,'R.C, 'M:P., for Auckland East, or upon Mr Wilford, M.P. for H-utt. Mr It. McKertzie's appointment as a member of the Government has left the Chairmanship of Committees vacant. — Post.
