Tho Star's .Whakatane correspondent ivires that a violent earthquake,, lasting about 30 seconds, followed, by smaller tremors, was experienced at 8.00 this morning. : S<>nie shop packages were shaken off the shelves. : ... - \ The shake is said to be heavier than those experienced at Whakatane during; tho. Tar awera eruption, although not> as long in duration. Whale Island was enveloped in what appeared to be a dense diist, which gradually disappeared, and left the island in a normal state. . • AUgKLAND, to-day. The earthquake daihaged a' shed erected to hold material for the Whakatane bridge, to the extent that it had to be strengthened. . . Fishermen at sea at the time confirm the impression held at Whakatane that there was an eruption on Whale Island, or a tremendous landslide on the seaward side, which-.caus-ed great clouds of dust to ascend. Whale Island is only seven miles distant from Whakatane.
