THREATENED BEER DEPOT.
[PEEBB ASSOCIATION.] ASHBURTON, last night. As a result of persistent rumors that a, 'brewery or beer depot was to be established on the border of the Ashburten rio-license district, the boundary of which is now only a mile outside tho town, a member of the No-license Council telegraphed- to the Minister, of Customs to-day, asking for a. deiiial of the rumor, as such action Would be regarded as an outrage on public sentiment. Replying, the Bon. Mr Millar stat-. Ed that no permit for a' depot had been granted, but the law did not require a permit for the erection, of a,, brewery. Notification had. been received, as required by law, that, a brewery v/as about to bo erected, but the matter had not yet been dealt with. Government would go So far as it had power to endeavor topi-e^ vent the placing of any brewery or depot immediately on the boundaries^ of a iiorlicense district: •
