J. C. WILLIAMSON'S COMPANY.
"MRS WIGGS OF THE 'CABBAGE ■» PATCH." On Thursday next, December 3rd, Mr J. C. Williamson will produce by arrangement with. Liebler and Co. (of Now York), "Mrs Wigga of the Cabbago .Patch." Food for ."laughter is "Mrs Wiggs of *he Cabbage Patch," which comes to Dannevirke, heralded by the praises of the entire Australian press, and the laughter wrung from delightful observers of the droll characters moving in and about the loquacious grass widow's home in' the poverty stricken Cabbage Patch is of the doubling-up kind. Under the influence of this humorous creation during a recent engagement in Boston, one refined and intelligent -w<£ man, Avho evidently knew Mrs Wiggs, Mis' Hazy, Lovey Mary, Mr Stub- ; biris, Mrs Eichorn, Mrs Schultz, and little Tommy long before they were transferred from the library to. the stage, so surrendered herself to the enjoyment of their eccentricities, that she became qufte hysterical during the performance, and sought the retiring room to recover her composure. She is only one of hundreds, however; every audience is spurred to unrestrained laughter by the sight of the dolorous Mis' Hazy in her bridal array, a mixture of black alpaca, Nottingham lace curtains and a Peacock cigarette; of the garrulous .Mrs Wiggs, plucking her false hair ..from the coal scuttle, the bibulous Mr '•Stubbing rocking the bride elect on his attenuated knee, the lathlike Mrs Eichorn's arrogant bearing, the ponderous Mrs Schultz's wabble and the grotesqueness of the others. A more amusing mosaic -of comic players, piquant dialogue and humorqus action could hardly be conceived. In the title role will be seen Ada Dwyer, one of the best character comediennes on the American stage. Her work has the distinction of a vignette. Helen Lowell as Mis' Hazy, the poor craven creature, victim of a matrimonial agent, furnishes a strikingly • original characterisation. John.Webber is said to be irresistibly funny in the role of the "soldier, of fortune," Hiram Stubbins. Miss Lottie Alters' individuality as "Lovey Mary" is even more pronounced than any of her predecessors. Others in the cast ■are Helohe Raymond as Mrs Eichorn, Giistine Armstrong as Mrs Sohultz, Miss Gordon as.Asia, Joseph Smiley as Mr Wigs, and Pearl Eagen as Australia. The box plan is now open at Bart-lett's.
