GREAT PLAY BY THE AUSTRALIANS. CUP RETAINED IN AUSTRALIA. MELBOURNE, last night. The we\ther was fine and hot, and the attendance exceptionally largo. Excitement was at fever heat when Wilding made the winning; shot: : • Mr Bea Is- Wright, interviewed, 'said tjie play was fine throughout the contest and of the highest standard of any r ho had -taken part in.- It was the -closest contest ho had ever seen and the first time in the history of the cup that the match had gone to the fifth set. Alexander declared that Wilding was too good for him, but he Mas too tired to be interviewed. ■ Wilding, who was carried- off the court shoulder high, said that when BeaLs-Wright defeated Brookes, ho fully expected the Americans to win, and thought Alexander would beat him ' after his showing . against Brookes, but he did not play nearly so well. The tennis all through wa-s infinitely better than in the Wimbledon contest, and it was tho best -Davis Cup competition ho had ever known.
