MR. HUNTER AND THE ADVOCATE.
At his meeting on Saturday night, Mr George Hunter was advertised to "reply to Dr Findlay, the Dannevirke Advocate, and others." So far as this joural was concerned Mr Hunter's reply developed into a pitiful attempt to awaken sympathy by a reference to a printer's error. In Mr Hunter's advertisement calling that particular meeting, tho notification concluded with the following line, "HE FIGHTS HIS OWN BATTLE !" By a printer's er-ror the note of exclamation was turned into a note of interrogation., and in one issue tho line appeared as follows : — "HE FIGHTS HIS OWN BATTLE ?" Directly our attention was called to the error, it was remedied, and an explanation to this effect was given to Mr Mcjiityr©, and in Friday's ' and Saturday's issues the advertisement appeared correctly. Mr Hunter, out of this simple incident, endeavored to induce his hearers to believe that this mistake had" been purposely effected to' cast a reflection upon him, and to imply that ho was not capable of replying. A more absurdly child-, ish attempt to gain popular, sympathy by downright misrepresentation has not occurred in the whole election campaign. His continued reference to the "Bush" Advocate — to enable him to work off a silly sneer, was in execrable taste, especially when it is considered that the candidate is usually credited with tho attributes of a gentleman and a sportsman. There is no "bush" now, as the term was once used, and there has been no "Bush" Advocate for years. However, whether the journal is seen out of the "bush" or not, it is quite certain that the Advocate assisted at the last elections to- give tho people of tho electorate a proper understanding of what might follow on Mr Hunter's election, and we have no doubt but that a similar result can bo looked for after to-morrow's poll has boon taken. The Advocate has gained its present strong position by virtue of the support of tho people throughout the whole electorate, and despite all the efforts of Moneybags and Land Monopolists of the Hunter type, it will still be found fighting the battles of the people.
