PALMERSTON N., last night

The sitting of the Supreme Court was continued to-day, before Mr Justice Chapman. Thos. Gleeson was charged with a breach of the Bankruptcy Act by incurring debts without any reasonable ground of expectation of paying the same. The D.O.A. produced the bankrupt's books, which showed a bad state of affairs. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy on the grounds of accused's inexperience and sentence was reserved.

PALMERSTON NORTH, to-day. Accused was to-day sentenced to 14 days 'imprisonment, ■ without hard labor, Mr Justice Chapman refusing probation. He said the Legislature intended in a case like the present one that the accused should be punished with imprisonment. He expressed regret at having to sentence prisoner, a young man of presumably good character, but he could not set at naught the provisions of the Legislature.

WELLINGTON, to-day

At' the Supreme Court to-day John William Bishop, alias Brown,- was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for theft from a dwelling.
