SECOND EDITION. THE EXHIBITION.
« [Special Service.] Chbistchubch, February 14. There was a large attendance at the •Exhibition to-day, the band contest proving once again a strong attraction. Mr W. H. Monk, of Sydney, played organ accompaniments to the violin solos of his brother at a well-attended concert in the afternoon, and several organ solos at a concert in the evening, which appealed - strongly to a large audience. Mr West, who has been exhibiting at half -hour intervals daily since the Exhibition opened moving pictures in a small hall known as the Castle Theatre, gave his 1107 th consecutive display this evening. Mr West has now put through one and a half million feet of film, or over 285 miles, and some 25 million photographs have, he states, been projected on the screen. He claims that this is a world's record likely to stand for some time.
The Hawke's Bay Maoris gave a performance at the Pa this afternoon before a large attendance. Already their entertainments have achieved a popularity second to none that have been given in the Pa before them. Miss Jenning?, who had the distinction of being the millionth visitor to the Exhibition, was presented with the promised gold watch by Mr Fowlds, Minister in cjharge, this afternoon. The Westland School Cadets arrived at the Exhibition to-day. -i The demonstrations in bee handling and hive manipulation given by Mr L Hopkins, Government apiarist, and his assistance at the Government bee exhibit, are a popular feature at the Exhibitions. The keenest interest is taken in the obsp- ".hive. Bandsmen w' ,• been witnesses of the popular*. uch competitions in other centre s"ots^1 t re that the quickstep contest on Saturday should attract an attendance to the Exhibition of fully 20,000. This event is expected to be far and away the most attractive to the public of the entire programme of contests. Preparations are now complete for the military tattoo to-morrow night, in which all competing bands will take part. Given favourable weather, of which there is at present every indication, a unique spectacle should lie afforded. The secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association reports having secured the largest entry on record for the championship meeting to be held on the Exhibition sports ground on Thursday and Saturday next. The entries for the championship events number no fewer than 136. and the various handicaps have drawn the enormous entry of 317. ( Novelty will be a strong feature of the Canterbury Automobile Association's motor gymkhana to he held on the sports ground on Saturday, March 9th. _______
