WEBER SCHOOL CONCERT.
The Weber School Concert in aid of the prize fund was held in the school on Friday evening. The building was crowded in every part and the concert was in every way a pronounced success. The programme was given entirely by the school children, who worked enthusiastically with the teachers right through to make the concert a thorough success, and some of the pupils had very heavy work as they had to appear several times during the evening. Messrs A. Herbert and A. Muscut^. /two senior pupils, opened tlie first; part of the programme with a pianoforte duet, and the. next dozen items were given by the infants, whose singing and reciting was very much appreciated. ; The first half concluded with a dialogue, " Strategy," by four senior^ girls, Misses A. Herbert, A. Muscutt, Time Mackenzie, and Annie Charteris. The girls all did their parts splendidly, especially Misses Herbert and Muscutt, who had very difficult pieces, and they deserve great credit for their good acting. The piece kept the audience in roars of laughter the whole time.
Miss Alma Herbert opened the second, part with a very pretty pianoforte solo. This half was devoted to the senior pupils, and was composed of choruses, drill, recitations, etc. The choruses were very good and the voices of the children were heard to great advantage. » The drill items were a special feature of the concert, eight girls gave an exhibition of dumb-bell drill and kept splendid time, doing all the exercises in good style. The dumb-bell and physical drill by the boys was also very well done.
A very amusing dialogue (a doctor by proxy) was contributed Dy Masters Ben Palmer, John Mackenzie, Jim-Charteris, Alex Mackenzie. Bob Charteris, and Miss Winnie. Thompson. The acting was very good, the boys entering into the piece .with their whole hearts and caused continuous roars of laughter from the audience.
The programme concluded with a tableau (break the nevrs to mother). The stage was made to appear as a scene at front with a wounded soldier attended by his comrades and Bed cross nurses. In another scene the brokenhearted, mother is receiving the sad intelligence of her son's death. Miss Alma Herbert sang the solo and chorus her sw£et voice doing the piece full justice; The whole with limelight effect presented a very imposing sight.. ' To particularise every item would be impossible, needless jto say the pupils acquitted themselves well right through. . At the. conclusion of the concert, Mr Palmer, the Chairman of the School Committee, thanked the parents and friends for fcheir presence. . . The thanks of the teachers are due to Miss Driscoll for her (valuable as. sistance given in preparing tHe programme, and to the ladies and committee who kindly assisted with the children. ,
The proceeds of the concert amounted to £15 which will enable good prizes to be procured. . The dance following the concert was well attended, dancing Jbeing kept up until daylight.
