The Chicago city authorities have declared the use of asbestos curtains for cutting off the stage from auditorium inadequate, and owners of theatres in Chicago have been ordered to construct steel roller curtains, and also construct wide exits, each with a stairway to the street. The use of combustibles and calcium lights is prohibited in the theatres. The authorities have also ordered the construetiou of skylights over the stage, fitted with automatic lids, so as to enable the smoke to esCupo iv case of fire. Gas jets are to bo protected with wire nettings. Stringentprecautions have been tulren against fires in theatres in other cities.
