TWO CANDIDATES IN THE FIELD. i The information recently forwarded to us by our Pahiatua correspondent, to the effect that Mr James Taylor (Mayor of Wbodville) would be a candidate for the Waipawa seat was correct, as the latter gentleman has now definitely decided, to contest the seat. Mr Taylor will stand as an. Independent Liberal, and is opposed to Mr Seddon: \: A message forwarded to us to-day from ■WoodviUe states that Mr Taylor will arrive:in Dannevirke to-morrow to make arrangements for delivering addresses in this town and other parts of the electorate,,

Whyte, mentioned as a probable candidate for j the Hawke's Bay seat. He announced himself as a supporter of the present Government, but the greater part of hi* address consisted of an advocacy of a light line, railway from Hastings -to Waiwera. He was accorded a vote of thanks. : • ' " j While Mr Lough rey was addressing the electors at Linwood a man named Hunter put a question, of a personal nature, and the candidate replied :— "You want a clip iv the ear. "— (Ap-i plause.) A Voice: "That is not Parliamentary. " — (Laughter.) Mr Lougbrey : "No, but ifc is true, "t- - Mr Hunter: " The attack is quite unjustified, aud I challenge you to do anything to me outsid«, small and all as I am. " Under the new Electoral Act the writs ate returnable within tweuty-oue days from the duy of issue. Nominations of candidates are to be in the hands Of tfce returning officer not later than five o'clock oftlio afternoon of the seventh day before the day appointed for the poll.
