GkEYMOTJTH, Jan, 26. The largest gathering ev*r seeu in Greymouth took place last evening ftbeu Sir.J. G. Wurd delivered an
address. He said th'o piuchitse of private estate amounted to about 350,000 awes, wl.iob bat oost Something like £1,844,000, The revenue denvtd wmß £72,781, the interest paid being £59,060. The profit for the year ending October, 1901, was £13,692. Referring to the produce '.•xports, he said we could hold our own against uuy cooutry, even Deumark and tho Argentiue, in th« matter of produce. - The Government had givon awuy last year £138,000 in reductions in Customs duties.
Up to 31st December, 1901 , increases were shown iv all departments. The total receipts were £4,211,612, and for the same period the previous year £4,010,620, an increase of £181,000. There was still three months to run, and the increase would be a good deal greater. '1 he total amount authorised for public wb^ks expenditure had been spent in , eight mouths, and it was the duty of the Government to stop works after thar vote was spent. Ho really was couvinced that the position of the colony was perfectly sound.
