DANEVIRKE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
4The Council met on Thursday evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor and Councillors McPhe», Drummond, W. Henderson, U. Baddeley, and O. Carlson. Correspondence was read— From the Railw»y Commissioners, itating that they could not see their way to grant the Council's request that the railway reserves on both sides of the line from Christian street to Cole street should be handed over to the Council for road purposes, as they were not satisfied that the reserves would not be required for railway purposes. From Auditor-General, approving i of balance-Bheet for half-year to 30th ' September. From Mr Lipsfc, Hastings, that bt i would be glad to give estimates for i jinking artesian well. , From Mr Gilberd, that he would b« ' pleased to put down a trial bore for < an artesian well either by day work 1 or by contract, and stating his prices. « H« did not think it would be neces- ' sary to sink to a great depth to get ' water. 1 Accounts amounting to £67 14s id l . were pa«sed for payment. \ The Engineer reported that he found the levels and the plans of the levels satisfactory. He also pointed t out works that should be done on \ the main road opposite Mr Paulsen's v to prevent water lying there. t Tenders were received as follows :— r
Widening, lowering, and metalling 23| chains High-street : Cosgrove Bros., £5 per cbain (accepted) ; It. Warner, £6 Os ; J. H.Anderson, £1 50 lump sum ; A. Nathan, £130; J. Carmody, j612!) 10s. Widening, lowering, and metalling 46 chains High-street North :— J. Carmody, .£238 lCs (accepted) ; A. Nathan, £300 ; J. H. Anderson, /550 ; R. Warner, £6 2s 6d per chain ; D. Burke, £6 7s 6d per chain ; Ccsgrove Bros., £5 155. Forming and metalling 6 chains MoCallum street ; W. Haine*, £17 16* 9d (accepted). Clearing, forming, and metalling about 23 chains Smith street : D. McKenzie and Co, £97 (accepted) ; W. Haines, £0 17s 9d per chain ; It. Warner, £4 153 6d ; J. H. Anderson, ,£145 lump sum ; J. Carmody, £107. The total amount of the works let was £490. Cr Hendorson move 1 that no tender be accepted for Smith street, but that tenders be ! called for clearing it. That, he thought, would meet present requirements, and when roads were made in the block it would be time enough to form and metal the street. If there were enough monejr to do all tha works without running into debt be would be in favor of carrying out tha works on Smith street, but as it was the Council would be short of funds. Cr Henderson's motion was not seconded. On the motion of Crs McPhee and Carlson the lowest tender for each contract was accepted. Mr Haines wrote claiming Is extra for each of the permanent level blocks on account of alterations made under instructions from the Town Clerk. It appeared that the cement obtained by Air Haines for making the blocks was not of good quality, and that he bad to obtain a fresh supply to finish off the blocks, as the engineer would not pass the blocks as at first made. It was considered that Mr 'Haines had been leniently treated, and the claim was not entertained. The works committee, Crs Druramond and Carlson, reported that culverts were needed at some of the street crossings in the southern end of the town to .keep the water from backing up onto the streets. On the motion of Crs Drummond and Henderson it was resolved that the Engineer have the culverts put in. The committee also pointed out tbat something should be done on tha road leading past Mr Cullinane's. Cr Drummond moved that tenders be called for clearing and forming the road.— Seconded by Cr Carlson and carried. Cr Baddeley pointed out tin bud state of the footpath in High street, and it was decided to hava a few loads of metal spread there. Attention was also called to the leaky condition of some of the verandahs. Cr Baddeley gave notice of motion to make a bye law that owners of property shall pay half the cost of making footpaths of asphalt or concrete. Crs Carlson and SlcPhee were appointed works committee. Cr Drummond B«d the engineer had been put to a lot of extra work lately, and ho should be granted a small bonus.— Tha matter wa» deferred. The Mayor said the Council would meet again on the 20th inst. at 12 noon to instal the Mayor-elect, and transact ordinary business. Cr Drummond moved a hearty *ote of thanks to the retiring Mayor. They had had their little diffirences, but be believed the Mayor had always acted for what he thought was the best, and they were as good friends' as ever. — Cr McPhee seconded. — The Mayor, in thanking the Council, said they had bad tbeir little tug-of-war, but there was no animus between them, and he would continue to do all that was in his power for tbs welfare of\ the borough. After the Council meeting a subscription list was opened in aid of the sufferers by the floods, when £10 was raised, particulars of which are published elsewhere.
