" Are yoa the editor that takes in the society items'? " inquired tha caller, an undersized man, with a timid, appealing look on his face. " Yes, sir,'' replied the young* man at the desk. " I ean take in any kind of items What have you 7 " "Why, .t's thia way," said the caller, I lowering* bis voice. "Jfy wife gave a swell party last night, and fm willing to pay to have this write-up of the affair put in your paper." "Wedon'teharge anything for publishing sooiety items," observed the young man at tho desk, talcing the proffered manuscript and looking' it over. " That's all right,'' was the reply. "Yon don't understand. 1 wrote this up myself, and I put in a line or two that saya, 'Mr Halfstick assisted his distinguished wife in receiving the guests.' That's the way I want it to go in, and I don't oare if it oostß a ' dollar a line. I want my friends to know, by George, that I still belong to the family."
