State Education in England.
At a period when we arc engaged in ■ modifying our State education plan? and clipping the pay of teachers, the report of the Education department of Great. Britain, just published, is interesting and instructive. The report shows that for the year ending December, 1892, therewas paid in annual grants to day schools • L3,G87,187 Ijs 9d^ Besides this sum, L 1.542,930 12s lid was pmd for fee> crants for scholars. Annual grants,to "ainind colleges amounted to-' L 130..1.32 18s sd, and the cost of administration was L2u3,077. The total expenditure of tho public elementary schools reached the sum of L 5,057,958. «r an average of L2 2s per scholar. The - statistics of tho public elementary schools - show, of course, i hat the scholars continue to increase. There was last year accommodation, in England and "Wales for • 5,092, 975 scholars. The scholars on tho register numbered 0, 000,979, tho average- ai tendance was 3.570,774. Teachers are by no means overpaid. Out • of 12,000 mtn 8000 were obtaining salaries of less than Ll5O per annum. O£
16,000 mistresses 1 j.OOO were obtaining salaries ranging from L4O to LOO. In a great many instances the salary is less- - than LIOO, and only in comparatively few does it exceed L2OO. In this connection we may mention that a rural schcol board in the north of Scotland recently adver- • tised for a female teacher at L3O per - ~ annum. They had not a single application.
