American Railway Statistics.
o According to " Poor's Manual," the total length of railways in the United States at the closo of 1892 was 175,223 miles, the addition in the year having beeu 4,429 miles. The mileage at the close of the fiscal years of the companies waß 171,81.0 miles of main line track. Tho liabilities of these companies were 11,059,000,000d01, and the assets 11,452,000,000d01. Tuli statistics of operation wero received from companies working 170,007 miles, and ou the data thus furnished the following statement is based : — The revenue train mileage, exolueiva of elevated railroads, was 805,000,000 ; the passenger mileage, 13,007,000,000 ; the freight toninileogo, 54,448,000,000. Tho total traffio earnings were 1,205, 000,000dol.; working expenses, S17,000,000dol.; net earnings, 059,000,000 dol.; other receipts, 115,000,000dol.; total available revenue, 474,000,000d01. Tho payments for interest amounted to over •239,000,000d01., and in dividends to a little over 53,000,000d01. The ton-milo rato for tbo year was 0-967 cent., which is somewhat better than the two preceding years, and nearly as good as the year ISS9. The freight reoeipte per mile of railway wore the best sinoe 1883, having boen •1757d01. The tonnage of freight hauled per mila was 4392, the highest figure over recorded. Tho tonnage of freight per Iroight-train mile was IGI'2I, less than oither of tha two preceding years, but greater than in any other year. The average haul per ton was 112.7 miles. The average passenger fare was 2-143 cents per mile, baing the lowest ever recorded. Tho receipts ptr mile of railway from passenger fares were 1721d01., which is less (ban during most of the preceding ton years. The passengers oarried per milo of railway were 3375, and the average train load '12-29. Tho interest paid on bonds and debt amounted tj-i-3S per cen'... ; the., dividends on stock to IOS per cent. ; and the total payments ol' interest and dividends to 301 per oent. The rolling-stock at the end of 1892 consisted of 3."),7<31 locomotives, 34,221 passenger oarriiiires, and 1,1G5,867 freight cars. Tho iiii'.oage of steel rail track was IS2,SoS, being an increase of about 8000 miles ; and tho mileage of iron rail traok 38,011, a decroaso of 1100 miles.— " The Times."
