The Bush Advocate SATURDAY, JULY 9. LOCAL RAILWAY TRAFFIC.
Pbom the Commissioners' annual report on. ■working railways, we glean the following facts relating to the railway traffic for tho prosent year at the WoodTille, Danevirke, Makotuku and Ormondville stations. The number of paisenger tickets issued were : WoodTillo, 9072; Danevirke, 17,164 Makotuku, 2,100 ; OrmondTillo, 3,075. The principal oxporta from the different stations were : Woodville—Timber, 2,954 tons; firewood, 312 tons; wool, 396 tons. Danevirka — Timber, 7,320 tons; firewood, 3,420 tons; -wool, 474 tons. Makotuku — Timber, 3,388 tons ; firewood, 5,844 tons; wool, 15 tons. Ormondville— Timber, 257 tons; firewood, 1200 tons; wool, 22 tons. The total roturns were— Woodyille, £5,928; DaneTirke, £10,013; Makotuku, £4028 ; Ormondyille, £1,232. Compared with the reiurns for 1891, the number of ticket* issued at Woodvillo shows a decrease of 3,367, while the number issued at Danerirke has increased by 11,665, a truly phenomenal increase. Although a good proportion of this growth in the number of tickets issued must no doubt be attributed to the remoral oi the terminus to DaneTirke, other causes must have had & ahar», and we think the figures auoted are conclusiTe evidence of le growing importance of our township. In respect to passonger tickets Makotuku shows a slight decrease, and Ormondvillo a small increaso. Timber exports from i Danevirke for the past year were 1140 tons more than in 1891, while neither the Ormondvilla nor Makotuku returns are up to those of the preceding year. Of firewood Danerirke exported over 2000 tons more this year than was tho case laßt year, Makotuku 640 tons loeb,
and Ormondville 630 tons more. AVool was exported from Dauovirke^p the extent of 62 tons more than the preceding year, and at both Ormondvffle and Makotuku th« quantity was slightly increased. The total raturns show a falling off at Woodville. of £384, a rise at Danevirko of £3,3G2, a fall at Makotuku of £919, while at Or. i mondville the returns have improved by £76. \ Altogether the returns are oaloulated to give satisfaction, at least ss\far as Dane, j virke is concerned, all., the prinoiI)al items in the return having argely increased since the last report returned by the ' Commissioners. Let ua hop«> that our sieter townships, Makotuku and Ormondville, will, when the ' next annual report is prepared, prove to havo Bad an expansion of trade similar to that shown this year by Danevirke. The returns of revenue produced by private aiding traffic in this district show that the following amounts were paid: Tamaki limber Co., £1803; H.B. Timber Co., at their Makotuku and Danevirko sidings, paid £2,486; Tanner and Mortensen, Matamau, £505 ; Carlson and Co., £1,185. These figures will give sopio idea of tha dimensions, obtained by the timber industry in \ this district, for when such largo amounts are paid by the mills for freight alone it is not difftoult to imagine that other heads of expenditure run into figures of considerable magnitude.
