During the debate on a motion tbat an import duty should be placed on all coal imported into the colony MrjSeddon said the Railway Commissioners had reduced the use of Weatport coal, as they found that Newcastle coal was delivered in Wellington for 6a less than Westport coal. Mr Seddon Btat«d that 120,000 tons of coal were imported into this colony last year. The debato was adjourned. On Thursday evening the Coroner's Inquist Bill was read a second time. The motion for the second reading of the compensation to Licensed Victualer's Bill was negatived on the TOICSS. Mr Carncross lias announced his intention to move that women be admitted to seats in Parliament. In the Legislative Council the tfew Zealand Institute of Surveyors Bill wa« read a second time. It is the Colonial Treasurer's intention that foreign insurance companies shall, in addition to making the proposed deposit, pay_ income tax. Enquiry is boing mads by Hr Buckland if the Government are aware that an enumerator for the collection of agricultural statistics insisted on sub-enumerators insuring their lives with the Government Insurance Department before giving them employment. The Minister for Lands says that h« will soon be able to give the colony a clean bill of health as to scab. MrW.C. Smith asked why local bodies should now for the first time be charged ptamji duty of haif-a- | crown on declaration forms of application for subsidy, and was informed by the Premier that it was done on tha advice of the law officer of the Crown. The member for Tarauaki, Mr E. M. Smith, writes :— ' The Ironsand I took to Manakau has been made into splendid bar iron. It was pulled and bruised without any difficulty. lam bringing down some samples.'
