TO-DAY’S TELEGRAMS.

Wellington, Thursday.

Information has been received of the total wreck of the barque Schiehallion, homeward bound from Auckland, on the Isle of Wight. The ship St. Leonard is now ready for sea with a cargo valued at £90,000. She will probably sail to-morrow. The Commission on Higher Education held a preliminary meeting yesterday. Edgar Bastings, son of Horace Bastings, M.H.R., lately staion-master at Waihola, has just been arrested here, on a telegram from Christchurch, on a charge of forging a cheque for £7 ss, purporting to be signed by the General Manager of Railways, and given to Henry Allen, publican, Christchurch. Bastings was arrested on landing from the Wakatipu.
