DOMINION-WIDE RACING CARNIVAL

AUCKLAND CUP DAY

Golden Souvenir May Triumph:

Longsword Doughty Opponent: Railway Should Be Fine Race

The opening of a seven days' New Zealand racing and trotting carnival on Boxing Day will be distinguished by the running of the £5000 Auckland Cup at Ellerslie, where the Auckland Club will open its Christmas - New Year meeting, other highly important events on the first day being the Railway Handicap and Great Northern Foal Stakes. Other race meetings on Wednesday will be Dunedin, Taranaki, Manawatu and Waipukurau, while trotting clubs will be in full swing at Ashburton, Gore and Westport.

Golden Souvenir, half-brother to that superlative galloper Kindergarten, will attempt to emulate the deeds of such great performers as Welcome Jack, St. Hippo, Warstep. Scion, Rapier, Fast Passage and Cuddle by winning the Cup in the same year as he won the New Zealand Cup. He is a firm favourite in preliminary discussions, which have covered an unusually wide range. a Golden Souvenir is by the defunct sire Lang Bian, whose progeny have been having a remarkable run of success in long-distance races, culminating in a veritable triumph on New Zealand Cup day last month, when three or nls sons—Golden Souvenir, Chung Chong and Langue d'Or—filled the first tliree places, while another son, Longsword. finished fifth. Owned by Mr. E. N. Fitzgerald, of Gisborne, who won the Auckland Gup with Kindergarten In record time and with a record weight, 10.2, in 1942, Golden Souvenir is handicapped to carry 8.10 on Wednesday, Sib more than he carried in the New Zealand Cup, and he is likely to successfully accomplish the task set him. Longsword received a check at a vital stage in the running of the New Zealand Cup, otherwise he might have been in a place, and, as he now meets Golden Souvenir on 121b better terms, his prospects must be considered favourably. Both of these horses are in fine racing condition; befter, if anything, than at Riccarton. Good Weight-for-age Performer Foxwyn, who won the Cup last year, has come through a great preparation, j part of which was a successful run in the Waikato Cup last month, and he is nicely placed in the weights with 7.13, while | < Miss Medley, 7.0, is remarkably well 11 treated, for she has a New Zealand Oaks, |I Great Northern St. Leger, North Canter- | J bury Handicap and Canterbury Cup to \ < her credit. She won the last-mentioned event from Golden Souvenir after the ! ; handicaps were declared for the Auckland , Cup, and, as it was a weight-for-age race, ; was not liable to a rehandicap, the result ; < being that Golden Souvenir meets her ■ on 191b worse terms than in the Canter- H bury Cup. However, in her only handicap i: success, Miss Medley defeated a very j poor field. Although only two of the 20 horses ;; engaged have won over two miles—and < these are Golden Souvenir and Foxwyn — , several of them have been placed over j > the distance; for instance, Lou Rosa, who , is making his sixth attempt to win the ] ; Cup, has been placed four times; Landveyor ran second last year, while Raka- j nui. Representative and Chung Chong ;; have been placed in the New Zealand ' i Cup. Winners over middle distances this j: season include Lou Rosa, Rakanui, Long- | ; sword, Gienfalloch, Foxwyn, Sir Bian, Mr. ; Ro=a and Hormuz, while Representative , and Billy Peach have won over short i courses. The Cup should be a race worth going a long way to see, and it would not surprise if Golden Souvenir completed the two Cups double. Strong Sprint Field An exceptionally strong field is engaged in the Railway Handicap, with Exeter top-weight, 9.5, an impost which Iseenah carried to victory last year. As Exeter is every bit as good as Neenah he should be hard to beat. Theophilus, a good performer among hacks last season and winner of two open races this term, is the j actual favourite, but Tuis, Sweet Biscuit, Heorapa, Black Beret and Flowerbmn, | comparatively recent winners, all have . admirers. FIELDS AND PROSPECTS . Large fields are engaged throughout the day, and the prospects are:— 11.25—Robinson Handicap: First Divi-sion—Take-a-Lot bracket, Happy Fox bracket. Second Division: Royal Silver bracket, Bronya bracket. 12.20 Grarton Hurdles: Diamond King. Slavonik, Te Kawiti. 1 s—Great Northern Foal Stakes—Beau le Havre, Barwon, Regal Praise. 2 o—Auckland Cup: Golden Souvenir, Longsword, Foxwyn. 2 50—Queen's Plate: Kindroon, Lo ZinMallee bracket, Ruling Master. 3 40— Railway Handicap: Exeter, Theophilus, Sweet Biscuit. 4.25— Nursery Handicap: Majesty, Re-volte-Sahib bracket, Mindora. 515 — Christmas Handicap: Colonel Vaals, Valley Boy, Tavernside.
