TYPHOON'S TRIAL

FOR MANAWATU CUP

PAHIATUA PROSPECTS

Special to the Auckland Star PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. The Pahiatua summer meeting at Woodville to-morrow is expected to provide a j public trial for Typhoon, one of the fav- i oured candidates for the Manawatu Cup on Boxing Day, and the fixture is one j which can be regarded as a dress rehearsal for the Manawatu and Waipukurau meetings. Reports from Woodville indicate that he has done well since Lance Stowe took him in hand a fortnight ago, and his connections consider he has derived considerable benefit from his trip to Australia. The stillest problem of the day will be the Pahiatua Christmas Handicap, and not one of the nine acceptors can be ruled out of calculations. It is probable that Foxcatcher, who finished fast from a long way back at Otaki, will side-step clashing with Typhoon, and she must be given an undeniable chance with 7.10. Bay Robe will have no Glenfallochs to beat on this occasion and his recent track work at Awapuni suggests that he is an | improved horse. In the \Gothard Handicap he finished two lengths and a half ahead of Phoenix and, though the latter is sure to be improved by that race, Bay Robe may be his master again. Voltaire's fourth In the sprint at Otaki augured well for the approaching meetings, but he may be all the better for another race, and Lady Chips and Gay Lena, both good winners recently in hack ranks, should be capable of solid efforts. Kashmiri was third in the Oaks and £> ln g" ing Hills was fifth in the New Zealand Cup. There has been a fair amount of rain at Woodville during the week and the weather was threatening to-day, but there is a good sole of grass on the track, and . it should provide good going.
