FIVE SHIP DESERTERS
OXE SENT TO PRISON It was disclosed by the representative of a shipping company who prosecuted a deserter in the' Police Court to-day that five members of the crew of the steamer Samokla were missing when the ship left Auckland. "This man is one of the five," he said, referring to Edward Cape Ferguson (24), a seaman, who admitted desertion on December 6. . "These men seem to think it is all right to come ashore and stav in New Zealand. Although the ship has left Auckland, she is on the coast and departs finally from Bluff. Ferguson can be taken South and put on board," said the shipping company representative. Ferguson told the presiding justices, Messrs. Edward Smith and W. J. Jaffrey, that he was verv unhappy on the Samokla and did not wish to return to the ship. "Conditions on board are terrible and I'm quite happy in this nice place," he added. He was told that the Board of Trade would attend to anv complaints made by the crew. Ferguson was sentenced to one month's imprisonment and ordered to be placed on board his ship before she sails from New Zealand.
