MAKARAKA WIN

SIR BIAN SECOND

RACING AT TE AROHA

Air Port, who finished second in the Poland Cup at Paeroa last week, showed that he had struck his true form when he won the principal event at Te Aroha to-day from the lightly-weighted Sir Bian, with Hippodrome in third place. The weather was fine for the Poverty Bay Tun Club's spring meeting. There was a large attendance and the track was heavy.

Long Shot Comes Home A full brother to Beau Vaals, a Railway Handicap winner, won over hurdles at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting at Te Aroha this afternoon, and this was Royce, who recently returned to the Auckland province after a short period at Hawke's Bay. " He was a long shot in the betting (getting on for 20 to one), but that was no reflection on his ability to beat the opposition, for he was in front all the way, and won easing up from -Wildore, another outsider, which finished fast over the last quarter. Rara Avis sold out early, falling at the second fence, and Kilcommon lost his rider opposite the stand, where Royce and Evening Coat were eight lengths clear of Bronzo, with a gap to Sir Grant and South Riding, with Wildore heading the next bunch. The race was all over bar accidents a quarter of a mile from home, where Royce had drawn well clear of Evening Coat, and he made no mistake after that, to win as his rider, J. Williamson, liked. South Riding, went a fair race for a comparative novice to take third place, just ahead of Bronzo, with Entertainer, Tangirere and Ernada following. Trial in Divisions Bronya was a very hot favourite for the Trial Handicap, which was run in divisions and, contrary to anticipations, she was well beaten after having had every chance. She was a bit fractious at the barrier and, although she was not first out she was on the move and soon hit the front, but was headed halfway up the straight and put in a very weak finish. Her form to-day was definitely below that shown at Paeroa. The winner was Valtoon, who was making his first appearance on a race track, although he had been at work for over a year, and he finished on very solidly to take the verdict by a head from. Race Lad in what was really a blanket finish. Bronya and Tin Musk were well clear at the half-mile, where they were followed by Nanakea, Miss Malibu, Whitford Queen, Bonny Grey and Valtoon. Bronya was two lengths in front turning for home, but the field bunched at the distance and Valtoon did best to get the verdict. Bonny Grey was a close third and then came Royal Silver, Kanga and Bronya.

Golden Shar, who had a race won at Paeroa a fortnight ago only for running off the track at the entrance to the birdcage, made amends to take the second division of the Trial, and her performance was a good one, too, for she was several lengths back at the half-mile, but, nevertheless, in a winning position turning for home. Halfway down the running Golden Shar was in front and had no difficulty in holding on to win by a length from Brown Night, who finished fast on the fence to take second place from Battle Royal. San Rosa, Silver Lining, Skymaster, Battle Royal and Beau Martian formed the vanguard for the first four furlongs and there was not much between them, but at that stage Golden Sjhar was closing up and Brown Night was improving, too, from the ruck. Golden Shar was clear halfway down the stretch and Battle Royal just failed to hold on and take second money. Koura Dink was responsible for a good performance to be fourth and may soon earn some money, while Borderer, To-night and. Tilting did the best of the others.
