PALESTINE FACES VIOLENT OUTBREAK
ARAB ANGER MOUNTS
Threats By Secretary Of Powerful League N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 5. Unless outside action is taken in Palestine, it is believed here that violence on a serious scale is likely to sweep the country. The situation there is reported to be becoming increasingly tense, as the Arabs' anger at Jewish immigration mounts. It is feared that the trouble may spread if it is fanned by the intense nationalistic spirit of the powerful Middle East Arab League.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Azzam Bey, who is now visiting London, has reiterated the league's demand that the British Government stands by the policy for Palestine laid down in the White Paper of 1939. He is taking the case to the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Ernest Bevin.
Azzam Bey issued a warning that if more Jews entered Palestine war was inevitable. "We want peace, but we are prepared to fight for it," he said The British and the other United. Nations should end this wholesale invasion of Palestine. Already, there are 600,000 or 700,000 Jews in Palestine and more are getting in daily. There are 1,000,000 Arabs there as well, and trouble is breaking out all tne time." Plentiful Supply of Weapons Azzam Bey added that the Arabs had all the weapons they needed. "We have what the victorious Eighth Army left behind in the Desert—tons of shells, hundreds of guns, transport enough for an army, hundreds of thousands of rifles and millions of rounds of ammunition, he said. In Palestine the Arab party has cabled Mohammed Ah J j"" president of the Moslem League ot India, repeating the demand for support. „ "This is the moment of climax, the former acting-Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Daniel Auster, stated in London. "If. as is rumoured the British Government allows only a trickle of Jewish refugees to entei Palestine there will be. trouble. i believe that if thousands of refugees try to land in Palestine and there is bloodshed, then the Pe°P le th ° e Palestine—Jews related to these refugees—will see only one course open They will do everything possible to bring them into the country rather than ha\e them deported."
