CITY GAS SUPPLY
REDUCTION NECESSARY
INDUSTRIAL) PLANT AFFECTED
Owing to an acute shortage of coal at the Auckland gas works no gas was available to-day for industrial purposes, and there will be no supplies for this purpose to-morrow and probably on Monday. While no restrictions have been imposed on domestic consumers, they have been asked to exercise economy.
It was explained by Mr. R. Worley, general manager of the Auckland Gas Coy., Ltd., that there, was barely sufficient coal to last until Monday morning. The Karepo, which was expected with supplies from Westport, had been delayed, and advice received last night was that there was no possibility of the vessel leaving before 9 a.m. to-day. The next ship coming with coal was the Kaimiro, now being loaded at Greymouth. This was expected to leave on Saturday and arrive on Tuesday.
Mr. Worley said supplies of coal during the past few weeks had been | on a hand-to-mouth basis and the last two shipments were inferior for gas making, but supplies had been maintained. It was possible, he | said, that the Mining Controller, Mr. C. H. Benney, if possible, would 'divert some coal to the works.
