CORONATION BALL

HAPPINESS CLUB AID A brilliant coronation ball to conclude the queen carnival held by the Happiness Club in aid of local charities took place in the Town Hall. The Mayoress, Mrs. Allum, who was introduced by Mr. J. W. Griffiths, crowned Miss Norma Goodyear (Mount Eden branch candidate) "queen of victory, peace and hapDiness." Taking part in the spectacular court ceremony were the 10 candidates, all wearing cream satin gowns and carrying scarlet posies with blue streamers. Each was preceded by a small page in the branch colours. The branch presidents were also on the stage. The Mayoress was presented with a bouquet by Mrs. Hemsley, president of the Mount Eden branch, and the Happiness Club director, Miss Joan Sutherland, presented a bouquet to Miss Kathleen Boyle, who trained the girls. Mr. D. Lock was master of ceremonies.

A generous presentation was made to the Military Annexe last night by the city branch of the club. On behalf of members, the president, Mrs. Pearson, presented the annexe with a chesterfield and two chairs, two surgical chairs and six bridge tables, to be followed by billiard cues. Sister Ashwin expressed thanks for the gift on behalf of the hospital. An enjoyable programme was given.
