TRAMWAYMEN'S HOURS
dispute before court
The Auckland Transport Board and the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Tramways Employees Union having failed to reach agreement on the matter, the question of the daily spread of hours within which a work-shift must be completed was argued before the Arbitration Court yesterday: A reduction in the spread of hours for shifts finishing at.6.30 p.m. from 12 hours to ll hours? and for shifts finishing at 8.20 p.m. from 12i to 12 hours was sought by the union. The clciim for a reduced spread of hours on broken shifts was a natter of major importance to Auckland tramway workers, the union secretary Mr A. E. Whitlow, said. After giving details of broken shifts he laid that sample rosters in support of the union's claims had been pre sented to the management. 5 Opposing the claim on behalf of ihp board, the secretary, Mr. C. K. Gribble, said the board contended it •had already compensated bioken shift employees by the extra 2d an hour Unless it reduced the service thereby affecting a large number of nassengers travelling to and from wnrk the board would not be able to keep within the spread of hours de Tlie nd Co d urt reserved its decision.
