SOME TO REMAIN
CONTROLS IN DOMINION TWO OR THREE YEARS MORE? Parliamentary Reporter. WELLINGTON, this day. It would be impossible to eliminate all controls now the war was over, stated Mr. Connolly (Govt., Dunedin West), during his financial debate speech in the House of Representatives yesterday. Some controls would have to operate possibly for another two or three years. Answering Opposition inquiries as to which would be maintained, Mr. Connolly replied they would include exchange control and import selection. It was far better to retain them and maintain economic stability; it was better to do this than allow a situation of chaos which would follow their elimination. It was significant that the English Conservatives, when they were in power, had expressed themselves in agreement with those views.Mr. Oram (Nat.. Manawatu): Who said all controls would be abolished? Mr. Connolly: Members of the National party. They went to Dunedin for the election and said they would abolish control. The inference was that they advocated the abolition of all controls.
