A HIGH PRICE
CANADIAN WHEAT
ADMISSION BY MINISTER Parliamentary Reporter. WELLINGTON, this day. A suggestion that the Government should pay 7/6 a bushel to all farmers who were prepared to sow wheat now, was made in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. Poison (Nat., Stratford), during his speech in the Budget debate. He added that such a policy would induce many small farmers to plant wheat in the hope of a substantial reward.
Mr. Poison reminded the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan, that with lend-lease gone, there would be a high rate for shipping charges and the price for overseas wheat would be considerable. He asked the Minister what was being paid for the Canadian wheat purchased by the Government. The Minister said it was obtained under the mutual aid agreement. The situation might change now, the whole question being under discussion. Mr. Poison: But what is the price?' The Minister: It is under discussion. Mr. Poison: The price is high? The Minister: Yes. . Mr. Poison added that he was anxious to see New Zealand farmers produce wheat and they should be paid 7/6 a bushel. The Minister: I am meeting the industry on Tuesday next.
