STEEP RISE IN COST

PROPOSED MABTON HOSPITAL O.C. WANGANUI, this day. When the erection of a medical surgical and maternity hospital at Marton was first mooted the price quoted to the Wanganui Hospital Board was approximately £16,000. Now members have been told that the hospital will cost between £40,000 and £50,000. The board's architect, Mr. C. Newton Hood, was instructed to prepare preliminary drawings and sketch plans of the proposed building and submit an estimated cost of the complete scheme, covering the site, sewerage, roading'requirements and the annual maintenance costs. « "If we delay the job another two years the price will be £80,000," remarked Mr. A. P. Howard. "One thing we are sure of. If the hospital costs £50,000 we know it will be worth about £25,000," remarked Mr. A. S. Coleman.
