TAXATION LEVEL

COMMERCIAL CRITICS

SHACKLE ON INDUSTRY P.A. WELLINGTON, this day. The joint taxation committee of the Associated Chambers of Commerce has issued a statement on the Budget. Regarding Mr. Nash's statement about his present inability to review taxation, the committee says that with the end of the war with Japan it was reasonable to expect the Minister to be prepared to reverse this statement. His present policy was likely to prejudice the programme for rehabilitation and full employment. Regarding the special depreciation allowance, the statement urges that it should operate forthwith and its conditions be clarified. The allowance for cost of royalties, research and patent rights should also operate forthwith. The statement in conclusion quotes Mr. Nash's words: "A rapid expansion in production, both primary and secondary, must be the predominant objective in our postwar activities," and adds: "The objective is an excellent one. It only remains for the Minister to support his words by energetic action; in removing the shackles from, enterprise and industry- One of the most effective of these shackles is undoubtedly the weight and anomalous incidence of existing taxation."
