TIME NOT RIPE
REOPENING WHARVES
NOT UNTIL AMERICANS GO
While a move is being made by the Wellington harbour authorities to obtain Government approval of the reopening of the wharves to the public, no similar action is expected to be taken in Auckland for at least a month or two.
"The use of the wharves by the Americans has almost ceased in Wellington, but the position is entirely different in Auckland," said Mr. J. H. Frater, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, to-day.
Mr. Frater added that it was likely that substantial quantities of American materials and supplies would continue to pass over the Auckland wharves for weeks to come, and that during that time the wharves would have to remain under police control. Meantime, the Harbour Board was not going into the question of relaxing the restrictions on public access. When the Americans completed their operations, concluded Mr. Frater. he could see no reason why the public should not have the freedom they enjoyed on the waterfront before the war.
