FRESH FROM VICTORY Sydney Greets Ships Back From Final Assault On Japs N.Z. Press Association—Copyright Rec. 11.30 a.m. SYDNEY, this day. Crowds lined the Sydney foreshores early to-day to watch the arrival of units of the British Fleet, which recently took part in the final assault on Japan. It was Sydney's first chance, since the war, of giving fitting welcome to a naval task force fresh from battle honours.
Five British warships arrived and the two aircraft carriers, Implacable and Formidable, escorted by the destroyers Undine, Urchin and Grenville, with Rear-Admiral Sir Philip Vian in command. Shipping in the harbour greeted the warships with their sirens. Avengers and Corsairs of the returV ing units landed at a New South Wales naval air station yesterday. Another British carrier, the Victorious, and the destroyer Urama, are due in Sydney this afternoon. All the ships have taken part m two big Pacific strikes, first against Sakashima in May, and second, against Japan itself. They have been at sea for three months.
