STYLISH FILLY
AWAPUNI JUVENILE FLIRTATIOUS APPEALS Special. PALMERSTON N., Thursday. Students of breeding predict that Flirtatious is likely to prove the pick of the t\Vo-year-okls at Awaptmi, and it is a matter for congratulation that this filly is not to be bustled along for spring racing. At present she is being handled and given light work by Eric Kendall, but is to do her racing from the Knapp stable. A picture of eepjine symmetry. Flirtatious shows the good bone and general conformation of both the Foxbridges and Beau Peres, favouring the latter sire if anything. Her dam, La Coquette, was not a racing success, but she went to the stud early. She was a half-sister to Siegmund and Wildflower, both of whom showed good handicap form. Lilimond, their dam, was a fine big mare—a typical Limond—and it would be surprising if the blending of Foxbridge, Beau Pere and Limond blood .in three generations did not result in something out of the ordinary.
By the way. Miss H. Collinson's Nlzami —Dignified filly was recently referred to as Endearer. This two-year-old's name, while pronounced somewhat similarly, is spelt Indira. Another neatly-named youngster here is Dickens, a bay gelding by Theio from Little Dorrit, while Skilled has been accepted for a gelding by Revelation from Linguist. Improved by Spell Broiefield is once again in work and the half-brother to the Great Northern Derby winner, Coronaire, has benefited appreciably by his short spell. In his last start, Broiefield ran Flying Tor to a head over ten furlongs on his home track in June, and there was not a bad race marked down against him all the season. There should be some good handicaps for Broiefield, but it would not surprise to see him put to jumping later on. W. Kirkland is working on a neat three-year-old bay gelding. Gay Stitches, by the Colossus horse Gay from Embroidery (dam of Locknit and Tatting), by Thr'eadneedle. Kena and Monte Cristo come from the same family. Dutch Mary, who was twice second and once third in seven starts as a two-year-old last season, has again been taken up by Harold Griffith. The Christopher Robin —Lady Oratress juvenile has grown into a nice filly and she leaves the impression she will not take long to come to hand. Brother to Essay Griffith brought back from Riccarton a two-year-old bay gelding by Christopher Robin from Hippolyta, an own brother to Essay. This youngster appears to be well forward and may be ready for the early summer meetings. Also in this stable is a neat chestnut filly by Christopher Robin from the Laughing Prince mare Snigger, who was a half-sister to that good sprinter Cadland. The pair ran up the straight early this week, hitting out in a manner which leaves the impression they will come to hand fairly quickly. A likely novice in the New stable is the big Defoe—Nightstep filly Imprint. She has not long been up, following her winter spell, but leaves the Impression that she will come to hand quickly. Nightstep is by Nightmarch from the Oaks winner Starmist, who was by Autumnus from the Martian mare Stardancer.
