RATES OF TAXATION
RETENTION CRITICISED REHABILITATING BUSINESS Parliamentary Reporter. WELLINGTON, this day. Discussing the revised estimates of expenditure in the House of Representatives yesterday, Mr. Bowden (Nat., Wellington West), declared that there was a general feeling that the figures presented by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, were not genuine, but were only intended as a device for maintaining the present high rates of taxation. The Minister apparently wanted to hold on to everything, so as to finish the year with a record surplus, enabling him to make reductions next year, but the people felt that reductions ought to be made at once, so that business could be rehabilitated. It was only by the production of goods that a nation could prosper, but the Budget contained no practicable suggestions on this point. There were pious platitudes, but nothing about how it was to be done.
