VACANCY FILLED
WHANGAREI BOROUGH COUNCIL O.C. WHANGAREI, this day. The vacancy on the Whangarei Borough Council caused by the resignation of Mr. R. J. Crosby was filled at a special meeting of the council last night by the appointment of Mr. W. M. Porter. The council had delayed the filling of the vacancy pending the learning of the result of representations to the Government that a by-election be permitted. This, in effect, was asking for the repeal of the War Emergency Regulations prohibiting the holding of by-elections for local authorities. No action had so far been taken by the Government, and, unless the council had filled the vacancy before the end of the month, an, appointment would have been made bv the Government.
