FALSE PRETENCES

LABOURER SENTENCED Sentence of 12 months' reformative detention on each of 12 charges of false pretences, to be served concurrently, was imposed on Harold Alexander McNeil (42), a labourer, when he appeared before Mr. Justice Cornish this morning. "I have read your statement in which you point out that you had no convictions for dishonesty till you were 39," said his Honor. "That is true, but, lest you regard that as merit, let me say that by the time you had reached the age of 39 you should have realised the folly as well as the criminality of such conduct." He would take into consideration that the offences had been committed within a comparatively short space of time, added his Honor. About £120 had been involved, and all the offences had taken place between May 8 and June 20.
