ARREST OF MAORI
PALMERSTON NTH. INTERLUDE
PALMERSTON N., this day
A chase after a Maori fugitive from the police was witnessed in several city streets yesterday afternoon, the pursued man eventually running into the arms of a constable who was actually looking for another man who had escaped from custody on a south-bound train.
Chased by Detective Quinn, the Maori fugitive traversed several streets. The attention he aroused orompted civilians to offer information to other members of the police force who were searching for the man who had jumped off the tram. Early in the chase a detective who was not far from his quarry became entangled with a carrier who was handling a bed. The Maori then secured a lead of about fifty yards.
Car drivers, a telegraph boy and others assisted in keeping the Maori in sight, till he went to cover in a block of houses. A search of these resulted in the Maori making oft again, but he ran into the arms of Constable Sleeth.
In the Police Court to-day, before Mr. C. C. Marsack, S.M., Hika Nuia Makaore, a labourer, of Wellington, who was the fugitive yesterday, was charged with breaking and entering a shop at Kilbirnie and stealing goods valued at £76. He was remanded to Wellington.
