NARROW ESCAPES
FIRE IN APARTMENTS FIERCE BLAZE AT PICTON P.A. BLENHEIM, this day. The kiosk tearooms in Picton were gutted by fire about 5.30 o'clock this morning. Ten occupants of apartments on the top floor narrowly escaped T)eing trapped and all had to make a hurred exit in their night attire, one of them sprinting a quarter of a mile in- his pyjamas to sound the fire alarm.
When the brigade arrived the building was burning fiercely and spreading to adjoining premises, but after a long fight the fire was brought under control. Several thousand pounds worth of stock from the adjoining stationery shop of Mr. A. E. Greig was moved on to the street, but the shop was saved though badly dam. aged by heat and water. The cause of the fire is not known.
