PERMITS FOR HOUSES

NO RESTRICTIONS URGED

The belief that there should not be any withholding of building per-mits-for houses, as at present, was expressed by Mr. H. J. Lichtenstein, president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, at a meeting of the council to-day. He maintained that if permits were issued without restriction the question of obtaining materials would be a matter for the individual.

Mr. N. B. Spencer said the issue of a permit to one person and a refusal to another in the same street created dissatisfaction and aggravated the position. Instead of training 600 carpenters at the trades school, he contended that the training- of bushmen should be concentrated on so that more timber would be available.
