TRENTHAM RACES

TENORMAN IS GOOD

SHOULD GO ON WINNING

In winning the Mariri Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at Trentharh on Saturday, the Wingatui horse Tenorman created a very favourable impression and he is expected to go on improving. This six-year-old son of Gustavo and Saxophone is a rugged type and a 'most proficient jumper, while he also possesses more than the average amount of pace. He had had only one race prior to this season, which he commenced auspiciously at Riverton on March 31 by winning the Waiau Steeplechase from quite a good field. He missed the Dunedin winter meeting, but at South Canterbury on May 26 ran second to Gay Fort in the Pareora Hack Steeplechase after losing a lot of ground at the start. South Island sportsmen would not hear of his defeat on Saturday and they had a royal win. Not Disgraced Kilmanagh,. which won the Hawke's Bay Steeples on May 23, was made favourite for the Mariri and she was not disgraced in being relegated to second place by Tenorman. The Siegfried mare became prominent about half a mile from home and was almost on terms with Tenorman at the final obstacle, but the latter then drew away to win decisively. Kilmanagh is only aged five years and she may add to her record before the season ends. The Paeroa horse, New Battle, made many friends by an excellent exhibition over the Trentham country on Tuesday last, but that run evidently "knocked" him, for he looked very light on Saturday and it was no surprise to see him tail off in the early stages and be pulled up with a round to go. ' The three - year - old Leighon filly, Leighon's Glory, which was trained at Ellerslie until last Easter, was unfortunate in running in the Woburn Hack Handicap, otherwise she would have beaten Grey Salute, whose success, by (he way, was long overdue. Leighon's Glory was eleventh at the home turn and she did not get clear until well down the stretch, where she put in a great run on the outside and ju.st failed to get up. She has registered two firsts and a second in four starts since being purchased by a Wellington owner, Mrs. E. W. Cummlng, and trained by W. Bromby at Trentham. Tifox was second favourite for this event, "but he missed the jump out and remained in the ruck. This was his tenth start this season for one first, a third and a fourth and that is only a slight improvement on his form last season, when he failed to win a race, his best being two seconds and a third in seven starts. A Bit of a Fox The Matamata-trained Foxbridge gelding, Irish Fox, disgraced himself in the Vittoria Hurdles. He jumped away smartly' and rushed into the lead after passing the stands, but when he got to the hurdle right opposite he stopped suddenly and his rider, M. Coon, was lucky to remain in the saddle. Irish Fox's honesty was suspected when he was racing on the flat and apparently a course of: schooling has not brought about the desired change. Abdicate, the winner of the Vittoria, is evidently pretty good. He only commenced racing over hurdles at the Manawatu meeting on June 6, when he lost his rider in the Ngata Hack and Hunters' Hurdles, but he finished. fourth in the Winter Cup later in the afternoon. His appearance in the Vittoria was his next start and he was never off the bit at any stage, ultimately scoring by several lengths after giving a polished exhibition oi ! hurdling. Abdicate is a six-year-old gelding by Salmagundi from Broken Rule and is entitled to favouritism for the Corunna Hurdles at the week-end. The Auckland-owned British Mint made his debut over hurdles in this event, but, although he got round safely, showed no dash at all and was always near the rear oi" the field. Above the Ordinary Before racing commenced, South Island sportsmen were loud In lamentation about the balloting out of Royal Flight from the Whyte Handicap. "She would have been a certainty" was their cry, but it is highly probable they shed some of their optimism when they saw Mr. F. Ormond's Lang Bian three-year-old, Ramicourt, literally run away from the field in the home stretch. The winner was one of the vanguard throughout and won with a lot in reserve.

■Bridge Acre, ridden by H. N. Wiggins, galloped on strongly over the final quarter and should be improved by the race, tout Derryogue, whom Wanganui and Taranaki sportsmen gave a second-to-none -chance, failed to see out the journey. Hippodrome', owned by - Mr. J. R. Henderson, of Hamilton, was doing good work at the finish and a longer distance might be to his liking. He had a very easy win over a mile, and a quarter at Te Rapa In May, when he was followed past the judge by Cracroft and Chung Chong. The last-named then came on to win a double at Ellerslie.
