AQUEDUCT WINS
SUCCESS AT HASTINGS BIG HURDLES TO TAKROUNA P.A. HASTINGS, this day The Hawke's Bay Jockey cW' winter meeting was held in fln e weather. There was a large attend ance and the course was in splendid order.
Kanui Tekoa Easily Vastly improved by his race at Awapuni, the Te Rapa-trained Kanui Tekoa won the Hastings Hack Hurdles in an all-Auckland finish the minor placings being filled by Brahman and Gayjax. Kanui Tekoa ran through to lead over the second fence and, jumping boldly throughout, made practically all the runnine from The Champ and Irish Pox, which retired five furlongs from' home, at which stage Brahman and Gayjax were moving up. Brahman had advanced to second place cross ing the second to last fence, hut was" outjumped by Kanui Tekoa, which drew away to win as he liked from Brahman and Gayjax. The placed horses were well clear of Rovce which was a long way back in th* middle stages, but finished strontfv The Champ, Crispin, Lotto and Tie Monarch were the next to finish Silver Note did not see the first fence in the scramble and lost his rider, while Glad Fox fell five fur longs from home. Maiden in Divisions In the first division of the Has. tings Maiden, Ette Quex ran past Silver Crest at the end of a furloiie and was not headed thereafter beJnt attended into the straight by Tracer Silver Crest, Miss Titaness, Master Gain, Susan Lee and Carey with Ganges coming through the middle of the field. Ette Quex was tackled by Ganges a furlong from home but was seasoned enough to hang on to win by a length, while Miss Titaness came home well into third place from Silver Crest, Susan Lee Poxella and Tracer. Beneficiary broke a leg about half a furlong off the post.
Beau Martian tried to win the second division all the way and was going well when Cinna Bay, Flying Orders and Gold Lad tackled him at the straight entrance. However he did not go on with it and Flying Orders took over below the distance to just hold Gold Lad at bay, the latter being unlucky, as he was carried wide at the bend. Chaka, which drew a bad position and was not sighted early, came home with a rattle to take the third placing off Cinna Bay, the next to finish being Master Gain, Wayside and Affable. Takrouna Popular
Takrouna was backed as a certainty for the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, and duly obliged, though she might have found her task more difficult if Expellant had not run in under pressure at the distance. Takrouna immediately went to the front, and, giving a brilliant display of leaping; soon opened up a nice break on Expellant, Royal Jay, Malacca and First Editon, High Morale having been eliminated at the second fence. Expellant went off slightly at that fence, but was on terms as they ran to the last hurdle. Here Expellant lost ground, but came again, only to run away from the.whip which simplified the task of Takrouna, which was clear at the post Malacca plodded on for third, ahead of First Edition, Royal Jay, and Moderate, which ran sourly. Royal Jay looked as if the race would improve him. ! Results: — HASTINGS HACK HUBDLES el £254. One mile and a naif. 9-10—KASOT TEKOA, 9.0-Caddy I
