SPEARMINT BLOOD
KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER Winner of the Kentucky Derby recently, Hoop Junior is a product of Sir G&llahad 111., a sire which has a remarkable record. By Teddy from the Spearmint mare Plucky Liege, Sir Gallahad 111. was a good winner in England before being shipped to America, and at his last start prior to crossing the Atlantic he won the Lincolnshire Handicap, one mile, by three lengths in 1.46 2-5. As a sire, Sir Gallahad 111. has done particularly well in the States, being four times leading sire and twice leading brood mare sire. Despite the fact that he was 24 years of age, he was still quoted at a 1500 dollars fee last season, and his book was full. Incidentally, that other Englishbred sire Blenheim 11. was standing at the same stud, his fee being 2500 dollars. PLANS FOR ROYAL FLIGHT Present intentions are to race Royal Flight at Trentham next month and her mission is to be the Whyte Handicap, states a southern report. Royal Flight won the Whyte Handicap as a three-year-old last veai- and she has been working stylishly in the interim. She has contested 28 races for three firsts, three seconds and five thirds, and has won stakes to the value of £3760, of which £10S5 has been won this season. SCHOOLING WELL Master Meruit and Edward continue to school stylishly at Hastings and the other morning they were responsible for a dashing exhibition over six of the steeplechase fences, taking each obstacle stride for stride. Edward is improving with each school and though he may not be so forward as others he looks like winning over country before the season draws to a close. POPULAR WITH OWNERS Congratulating the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club for providing fourth prizes, Mr. A. Syme, at the annual general meeting of members, said that it had been much appreciated by owners. In the North Island there was a move to ask clubs to provide fourth prizes, and it was hoped that the Canterbury Jockey Club's example would be followed. ANOTHER FOR TRENTHAM The well-performed Neenah, which was at a false price when he outclassed a strong field in the York Handicap, one mile, on the second day of the Great Northern meeting, is expected to be racing at Trentham next month, and as he has run some of the best races of his career at Trentham he will lot lack a staunch following when he goes into the starter's hands at the southern fixture.
