FOUR DEATHS

IN CROSSING SMASH THREE OTHERS INJURED O.c. HUNTLY, this day. Four persons were killed and three were seriously injured when a small sedan motor car was involved in a collision with a goods express train at Suttie's crossing, one mile north of Huntly, on Saturday afternoon. !The victims, two of whom were killed instantly, were:— Killed Mr. Arnold I/uther Gnbb, aged 33, married, with one child, a storekeeper, of Rotowaro, driver of the car, who died instantly. Mr. George Marshall, aged 39, married, with three children, a miner, of Rotowaro, who died in hospital. Mrs. Mabel Dorothy Marshall, aged 32, wife of Mr. Marshall, who died in hospital. Josephine Elizabeth Marshall, aged 6, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall, who died instantly. Injured Mrs. Hilda McCallum, aged about 40, sister of Mrs. Marshall, concussion and lacerations to the head. William Marshall, aged 3, concussion and shock. Baby Marshall, a girl, aged 2 weeks, concussion, lacerations to the head and other injuries. The party was on the way home to Rotowaro after Mr. Marshall had called for his wife and infant daughter from the maternity hospital at Huntly. A call was made on friends at Hakanoa Street, north of Huntly, and the car approached the crossing, which is obscured by a high bank, from the east. The train pulled up in a little over its own length. The car, which was wrecked, was carried about 60ft beyond the cattle stop. Drs. A. B. Jameson and E. E. Willoughby attended to the injured before they were removed to the Huntly Hospital in a mines rescue van from Rotowaro, the Huntly ambulance being away on a mission to Hamilton. Mr. Marshall died in the Huntly Hospital. Later, the injured were transferred to the Waikato Hospital, where Mrs. Marshall died yesterday morning. The condition of Mrs. H. McCallum and baby Marshall was reported to-day to be fair, while that of William Marshall was stated to be satisfactory.
