WOMAN CONSTABLE
DEATH IN AUCKLAND
FULL POLICE, FUNERAL
The death occurred this morning in the Auckland Hospital of Constable Elizabeth (Betty) McCarthy, aged 26, one of the best known members of the women's division at the central police station. Miss McCarthy, who was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. McCarthy, of 21, Calliope Road, Devonport, was appointed to the police force on February 29, 1944, and performed all her duties in Auckland. Last month, after being absent on sick leave, she went to
Franz Joseph Glacier to recuperate, but developed tonsilitis on her return, and on April 28 she was admitted to hospital. Pneumonia developed, from which she failed to recover. Constable M'dCarthy, who had ■ a cheerful, pleasant personality, was held in high respect and esteem by her colleagues in the force and also by members of the public. She distinguished herself by her courage and initiative and she was an efficient and industrious worker. Early last year Constable McCarthy was specially selected to obtain evidence for the prosecution of night clubs in the city. A full police funeral will take place at Devonport on Thursday at 2 30 p.m., leaving Calliope Road for the vehicular ferry and thence to Waikumete Cemetery. This will be the first occasion on which a police funeral will be accorded a woman.
