SAFE IN ENGLAND
t PROMINENT SPORTSMEN Captain A. S. Jamieson, former prominent Ponsonby and Auckland Rugby representative, is reported to be safe in England after spending about three years in prisoner of war camps in Germany. A fine type of five-eighth, Captain Jamieson, who skippered the Auckland representatives on numerous occasions, proceeded overseas in 1940 and was captured in the desert fighting of 1941. Another well-known sportsman to reach England is Captain P. F. Sharpley, of Napier, New Zealand hurdles champion and record holder. Captain Sharpley shares with the former All Black, G. W. Smith, the honour of being the only Dominion athlete to win national sprint and hurdle titles. At the 1939 •fNew Zealand championships at Napier, Sharpley won the 100 yards in 10 l-ss, defeating the former title-holder, G. Quinn. He represented I,'ew Zealand at Ui«> Melbourne Centennial Games and at the British Empire Games in Sydney in 1938.
